Antonín Dvořák Waltz Op. 54 No. 1 (for Wind Quintet)

A passionate and elegant piano work,

sensitively rendered for winds...

Antonín Dvořák (1841 – 1904) produced the eight Op. 54 Waltzes between 1879 and 1880. Originally written for solo piano, they have been orchestrated several times, and nos. 1 and 4 are particularly familiar to string quartet players everywhere. The set is endlessly inventive, both harmonically and melodically, and moods range from reticent to rumbustious.

(To better accommodate the more readily available Bb clarinet, the key of this arrangement is a semitone above that of the original.)
