Sir Arthur Sullivan Three little maids from school are we (for Wind Quintet)

An evergreen favourite from ‘The Mikado’...

Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842 – 1900), together with the dramatist and librettist Sir William Schwenck Gilbert, created a series of unique operas for Richard D'Oyly Carte’s Savoy Theatre in London, nearly all of which have become famous across the globe.

This number, from ‘The Mikado’, needs no introduction. It has been parodied, done to death, but never surpassed for lightness of touch, charm and wit.

As 3 does not happily go into 5, this arrangement does not give three particular instruments the maids’ roles; rather, everyone gets a look-in, in the spirit of equality and convivial ensemble playing.

Instrumentation:

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F, Bassoon
