J. S. Bach Musette in D BWV Anh.126 (for Wind Quintet)

A childhood piano staple, with some of its

folk music roots restored...

This comes from the Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach by J. S. Bach (1685 – 1750), and is in fact attributed to the prolific 'Anonymous'. Perhaps it is a traditional bagpipe tune, perhaps notated by an enthusiastic younger member of the Bach family...

The 'Little Notebook' is a collection of small-scale vocal and keyboard works that Bach compiled for his second wife, who was a professional singer. The book was gradually expanded over the years, and became almost a musical family photo album of pieces used for the keyboard tuition of the children, and of Anna herself; first compositions by various soon-to-be-famous sons; and pieces by musical colleagues and acquaintances.

Purists beware. As with other arrangements, a few liberties needed to be taken in order to make the arrangement worthwhile. In this case I have tried to take the music back to the earthiness of its folk roots, hence the drone patterns and additional ornamentation.
