Every so often, it’s because I have an idea and simply need to do something about it.
Other times, I write music if someone asks me to, for a particular occasion or group, for a church service, or as incidental music for theatre. The more restrictions and requirements that are given, the more interesting the project.
Examples have included:
A piece for cello and piano (about barnacles) using only the open strings
A multi-movement work for chorus, brass and percussion setting the text of the 'Benedicite'
Three pieces for wind quintet with familiar tunes hidden in the music,
commisioned as a present for fellow musicians
A work for three string orchestras, each at a different level of ability,
incorporating Taiko drummers, to be performed in a cave in Cornwall
A four-movement work for eight solo voices, with a collage of texts taken from traditional
weather lore and folk sayings about the natural world
